How Load GPX files to  Garmin Edge 800

15/06/2017

In the video above I talk you through how I load GPX files saved from Plotaroute onto a Garmin Edge 800 device and then how to setup the Garmin to navigate on the road.

The following is the video transcript from Youtube, there will be spelling mistakes and punctuation errors!

0:01it's very easy to load a route that
0:06you've plotted and plot a route onto
0:09your Garmin so you've saved your route
0:14load it up okay hit the download button
0:21download to a file
0:23GPX then led to a file
0:26I keep it in the default GPS GPX track
0:30and it works perfectly every time
0:37download thinks about it for a couple of
0:41seconds dududu go to your Garmin Garmin
0:52new files you save it into that folder
0:56give it a name that saves it when you
1:04then unplug your Garmin from the
1:08computer turn it on it will load that
1:11file into courses and then you can get
1:15it from there so this is my trusty
1:22Garmin 800 I think it is quite old now
1:28but it has navigated me throughout the
1:36UK and then I've got the maps for Spain
1:38and Portugal and we've done done about
1:422,000 miles in Spain and Portugal now
1:44all routed and put into GPX files and
1:51load it onto this Garmin so to load up
1:54the route you just made in plot a route
1:57and you edit the file to the new folders
2:05or new files folder on the garment then
2:09go menu courses
2:12go to the course that you put on which
2:16has been loaded in now and what I always
2:19do is for some reason turn guidance is
2:22always turned off so I turn that on and
2:25virtual partner is always on so I turn
2:27that off because I'm on that one I leave
2:31off course warnings on because sometimes
2:34the Garmin doesn't know about the
2:39Junction and doesn't warn you to turn
2:41but what it does do it tells you when
2:44you're off course with some buzzing
2:46noises which is really handy because
2:48otherwise you wouldn't notice and then
2:51you just hit go and there's a few sort
2:58of weird things that I will always start
3:02the navigation before I start the timer
3:08I don't know about the new Garmin's but
3:11there's some oddities on this one that
3:13if I start the timer and then start
3:16course sometimes I don't get the
3:18turn-by-turn instructions but that there
3:26are some weird things and they do happen
3:28but if you do it like I said there
3:30generally it works and sometimes there's
3:37some weird stuff that happens if you're
3:38not at the start of your route when
3:44you'd start it and it can sometimes take
3:48a while to get get sorted out but
3:51generally it works okay the biggest
3:55problem I find with this device is when
3:58I'm cycling along on a sunny day maybe
4:01going downhill at 40 miles an hour
4:04looking at the screen and where you're
4:10supposed to go with this little pink
4:12line it's just not strong enough in the
4:14sunlight and it can be really difficult
4:16to see where you're going
4:18so that would be my big problem with
4:23this thing but from that it tends to get
4:26even in the right place so there we go
